Do solid state drives offer any extra performance?

I'm building a new computer, and with the flooding in thailand right now shooting up the prices of hard drives, it's actually made solid state drives a valid competitor. So I'm thinking about possibly getting a SSD for my OS, and essential programs to live on ,like FL, ableton, and VST's. Will a SSD give me any added benefit for performance over a hard disk drive? I would not be loading samples onto the SSD because there simply isn't enough storage, but as far as booting up FL, or loading plugins, would I see added performance in that regard?
