How to insert events of a type not already recorded

The event editor lets me edit velocity, channel pan, channel volume, channel pitch, and whatever type of events that are already in the imported MIDI file or in the recording, but it does not let me enter events of a type that is not already there, for instance, when I'm writing some notes for a solo instrument and I want to add some vibrato. So, how do I do it?
