A lot of performers don't want to play to a click track, and want to vary tempo naturally.
Let's say you have a track with a MIDI note that follows the quarter notes, that either came from converting snare drum transients, or from some MIDI note that was tracked during the song, or even just created post-tracking by tapping a note along with the song.
There should be a tool to create a tempo automation that matches this tempo on a note-by-note basis. That way it would be easy to add MIDI tracks to the playlist while seamlessly being on time with the rest.
Example: From playlist track right click, "Create tempo automation from this track." In GUI, you choose which note to use (e.g. C#,D), and whether it's quarter, half, whole note, etc. A tempo automation is created that sets tempo between each note.
This would go a long way toward making MIDI more natural to use with live recordings.
