[Edit] To me it seems allowing the faders to be dragged down to -inf is part of the problem. Once you do that, the relation to the rest of the mix is destroyed. It's pointless. Better to press mute. At most it should be allowed to move down to the perceivable dynamic range of apprx. -100 dB, and when one of the faders in a selection hits this point ... further downward movement is blocked ... in order to preserve the mix balance. Same principle should be applied for upwards movement, but with max gain being reached blocking further upward moves.

That sounds like a decent idea to me!
