Hundreds of tracks

When I create a new project in FL studio (even from the Empty template) and then go to View Playlist, there are 500 tracks.
I don't need this many. Can I configure the number so there is less, or at least mute them all in one fell swoop? I have tried deleting them but a new one materializes in Track 500's place like a hydra.
