Connecting synth to FL part2

Ok. Ive got my 1/4" to 1/8" cable. After I hooked it up to input of my soundcard, I thought to myself, "Ok, now what?"
I have absolutely no idea where to begin. Do I need to change any soundcard settings or audio settings in FL? Next how exactly DO I record my synth? What needs to be done inside the program? Please help.
