Help drum and tempo questions!

Hello, I'm sure this has been asked a dozen times but... I need suggestions on the best way to create a drum roll and like a beat with a snare roll in it (if that makes any sense. Like say, a march.) And also how do I make one thing one tempo and another a different one in the step sequencer because I try and it makes everything else the same tempo? Please help! Thank you!
