Instrument Replaced

Ok. I am a) a noob b)really humbled and c)prepared to be ridiculed for asking this. I sincerely beseech anyone who can help me with this:

1) I create a pattern (kick, hat, clap, whatever)
2)I go to pattern 2 and change an instrument,
3) original instrument in pattern 1 is changed to match pattern 2
4) scream and kick my dog

I have SCOURED the net and looked at the manual, and while I have learned OODLES of things I can do with FL, it seems this is the thing I can't find. I have been in Pat and Song mode. I am about to sacrifice a chicken and spill the blood on my sound card.

Please for the love of all that's holy, and for my dog, help.
