Video editing and effects

Can anyone point me in the direction of some good video editing software? In recent years I've become more and more interested in creating some kind of videos for my music, but I don't really know where to begin. I'd really like to do something with colorful special effects and the like, so it's not enough to just cut and paste some video clips from my home video collection. I realize that this is probably a very complex process, but you have to start somewhere. Any advice?
