Recording MIDI to step Sequencer...my issue in FL8, not in 7

Alright...here's my issue....if anyone can lend any insight, I would appreciate it.

I'm able to activate samples in the step sequencer with my MIDI keyboard and want to record them into the step sequencer.
Yes I have the "record to step sequencer" MIDI option chosen.
I'm in pattern mode.
I think I've tried every variation of settings you can think of, all to no avail.

I was able to do this easily in FL7, but for some reason (with the same settings {I think}) I can't in Fl 8.

Any help?:(
