automation and sample question

I have a reocurring sample that repeats in my song...it is longer than the 16 bar pattern that it is in. The problem is there are points in the song(playlist) that i want the sample to stop...or be taken out. However the sample will continue playing past its pattern.....so if i want something to change or drop out in the song the pattern continues to play. With some samples i would just shorten the length to end precisely after 16 bars....but some samples i want the full duration.....and then i want them to drop out completely. Do i use automation to create this effect? If so, how do i automate for the entire song.....and not just one pattern. if i automate a sample pattern to drop out.....it will do it every time the pattern block is used. Can someone help me?
