Linear vs non-linear DAW

What is actually the difference?

In non-linear DAW, you can route many instruments to one mixer channel, or are there also other differences? Can anybody explain in detail differences between them?

Isn't actually more tidy and clean to have mixer channel per one instrument by default? What's are disadvantages of linear DAW?
