Invert Wet Switch in Flanger

The online manual for Flanger says that the invert wet switch inverts (the phase polarity of) the wet signal coming out of Flanger, and that the flanging effect is created when "mixing a signal with an inverted version of itself". This seems to imply that there are two versions of the wet signal with different phase polarities. But isn't there only one copy of the wet signal? How does it interact with itself?
