Sorry, I know this has been extensively discussed on this and other forums and here, but there's so many discussions that I just wanted to try and see what peoples current views are...
I usually mix on desktop monitors, but sometimes like to mix with headphones, to get a different take on things. I'm currently using an old pair of Audio Technica ATH-M40fs - to me they sound a little muddy and unclear (they're over 10 years old now).
I started looking at ATH-M50x (which appear to be very popular) but that led me on to looking at the ATH-M40x which are similar but apparently have a more neutral/flat response (which I understand to be better for mixing). The bonus is that they're cheaper, too.
I've also read that open-back headphones tend to be better for mixing (which both the M50x and M40x aren't), and I also understand they both have a narrow sound stage (perhaps because of their closed-back nature?), of which I'm completely unsure is a good or bad thing for mixing.
Can anyone offer any thoughts on this, or suggestions please? I'm not looking to spend too much more than GBP100, less if possible.
Thanks
