Distortion and Sluggish Audio

I'm having a problem with distortion every time I arm a track to record audio. I also noticed that it slows down my entire computer where the beat tempo goes slower and if I keep it armed and play music or go on the internet all the words sound screwed and chopped. I have to unplug my interface and plug it back in, and also disarm the track from recording audio for it to go back to normal. What is causing this and what can I do to fix this? I would really like to start recording all of my audio in FL Studio as soon as possible, but this is putting a delay in the process.
