So in your scenario, everyone helps make WINE better so that FL Studio can run better on it. This will in turn get more people, who presumably already have FL Studio, switch to Linux. Then when all this happens, IL will look at this "working" FL Studio on Linux that everyone else made happen for free, and say OK, now that more people are using a "working" FL Studio on Linux, let's invest time and money to get those people to move to our native Linux version instead even though we have even less to gain?12manny34 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 1:38 amAfter reading through all of this, I felt like throwing in a few cents.
I don't see any point in making a native Linux port of FL even at this moment, it has already been stated many times there's no money to be made from it at this time, and that's fine. We can all argue about the true market share Linux has in consumer desktop use, but at the end of the day, it's not like everyone's using Linux, and it's not like no one's using Linux, it's just not a good amount of people to get any ROI out of porting FL natively to Linux.
But at the end of reading all of this, I can't fathom how a bunch of you that desperately want FL on Linux just don't use WINE for it. I've tested FL 12 a couple years ago on a minimal Arch Linux installation running Gnome as my DE, for what I expected from it, it worked. FL ASIO worked almost as if it were made to link with Pulseaudio natively. The generators I had tested worked, the effects as well, I do not remember which ones off the top of my head since it's been a couple years like I said, but that's not the point I'm trying to make now.
WINE has come a long way, but it's still not perfect. Maybe FL Studio doesn't work well with WINE for others, if at all, but people are always working to make WINE better day by day. My question is, why aren't any of you contributing to that? Why try to convince Image-Line to do the work when they clearly see no value in it? WINE is the answer, it's almost perfect for running FL on the machine I tested it with, but as a collective of Linux enthusiasts you guys can probably make it perfect at some point, you just have to put in the work. Linux is pretty much the defacto OS for nerdy individuals that do not mind getting down to the bare metal software-wise to get exactly what they want from it, that energy has been put to use to make Linux better than most in many fronts, and WINE is a part of that. Imagine instead of having to beg on your knees to companies to have them port their software to Linux, you just use a translation layer to have the Windows binary run on your Linux setup. You don't have to imagine, that's already a thing and I just said the name of it several times so far.
To keep my point from dragging on, stop whining and use WINE. If WINE don't work, do your part in making it better by contributing to the project, either by literally improving its code to support the software you want, in this case FL, or report any bugs you encounter to WINE devs. Once we get the ball rolling to make Linux a truly viable option for people by having a tool that lets them use their Windows exclusive software on it, more people will switch. Valve has been doing this for close to a decade with SteamOS, and have not too long ago created Proton, a branch of WINE to help give Linux more support for games. This kind of effort gets more people on Linux, and once there's more people on Linux, companies like Image-Line will notice and consider making their software run natively on Linux, but at the end of the day who knows.
To bring my point home, spend time getting FL Studio running on WINE instead of ricing your DE and console with wacky formatting and colors, the Linux community will commend you.
