Re: Help file, Marketing & Website ERRORS!

Hi Scott,

I'd like to challenge your assertion on the following page...

https://www.image-line.com/support/flst ... pp_opt.htm

...that the delay between pressing a key on a real piano and the hammer hitting the strings is around 80ms.

I've previously challenged this on these forums, when trying to understand more about latency...

viewtopic.php?f=100&t=159857&p=1139768#p1139768

...but the topic remained unanswered by yourselves.

I can't find a lot on the internet about this, but I did find one interesting, if slightly technical article on the subject...

http://www.speech.kth.se/music/5_lectur ... asure.html

Interestingly, this also talks about a latency of 80ms, but if I've understood correctly, this is the time from the hammer hitting the string, to the damper falling down on the string to end the note, for a 'staccato-note' (i.e. pretty much the entire length of the note).

In this same study (looking at the diagram in particular), I believe that the time between the key being struck to the audio being produced is around 30ms.

And as I mentioned in my post above, if 80ms is an accurate figure for the 'latency' of a real piano, this doesn't explain why when I set my ASIO driver to 2048smp (48ms), this becomes virtually unplayable for fast-attack sounds (like a piano). Obviously 48ms is a shorter time than 80ms, so to me, this doesn't add up.

Any insight into this (if a correction is not required) would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

ps I haven't brought this up from a post so long ago just for the sake of it - I was RTFM on CPU usage (having read a recent post on a possible CPU usage improvement that Frederick has been working on), when I saw the 80ms figure again!)
