What use does it have to differentiate between audio clips and samples?

Hi there,

as the title says, I'm wondering why are samples and audio clips separate things? As far as I can tell, audio clips are just the same except they don't have ADSR functionality and all the other stuff you can do in a sampler, plus for some reason you cannot automate the time (at least for me it is greyed out). Would be nice if someone told me what I'm missing here :o
