Attached is a test (with audio results) for "zipper noise" when automating pitch of a 3xOsc channel at various PPQ levels. Length of the sweep is one bar = 2 seconds at 120BPM.
In this case Edit Events graph is used, but results are same for automation clips as well, as far as I've tested.
Everyone should be able to hear some stepping/graininess in 24PPQ and 48PPQ files.
I will be surprised if anyone hears it at 96PPQ.
I dare to claim that 192 and 384 PPQ files - of this particular test, not all others, perhaps! - will be indistinguishable from eachother for human ears. Null test shows a difference between them of course.
By the way, for reference: as far as I know, first Akai MPCs were set at 96PPQ, Cubase 1.x on Atari in 1990 was at 192PPQ, and some later Cubase versions for Atari Falcon in 1993 were at 384PPQ.
