How do I get fast high hats that don't sound fake?

I want some fast high hats like this...



But in the step sequencer they sound so one-dimensional and fake. Anyone have any good methods for making high hat rhythms?

Is the only thing to do make like a bunch of high hat channels with the same high hat, but tweaking the sound with effects and then randomize the beats across the channels? Would that do it? It feels like the beats get cut off too. Do I have to mess with the decay and release and junk? That feels like a hassle, maybe I'll just make a simpler beat...
