New to FL studio

Hi everyone

Really sorry to post such a basic question and I appreciate your help. Say I set an effect going in Flex (or could be any effect) and I trigger it once and it continues throughout the song. How do I stop it? I am guessing I must use a gate or a cutoff filter? Any help would be great. Please point to any demos or tutorials if you know any?
