Audio "Fingerprints"?

A little off topic maybe, as my question might pertain more to audio in general, but just wondering...

Is there a way to use FLS, or perhaps a plugin like Edison, to identify the characteristics that uniquely identify a particular type of sound?

In terms of diatonic harmony, we would do this using the 3rd or 7th notes of a scale to identify a chord, as major or minor, etc.. But here I am asking something more general, like with any given sample.

If one listens to foley scores for a movie soundtrack, one might hear something that sounds a bit like rain but it might turn out to be a hamburger sizzling or an audience clapping; there's a certain ambiguity to the way a raw audio sample might sound. But, still, we can somehow tell (probably by the overtones and partials) what a producer intended, so identifying a sound must depend on its source and how that source emits vibrations. In a virtual, or in any electronic environment, a sound always becomes "not" a sound, yet some plugin manufacturers have been able to replicate guitar preamps to create signature sounds, like Eddie Van Halen's Amp compared to U2's The Edge's amps. However these forms are generated is only half the question; to replicate such sounds, one must first be able to idenitfy their unique characteristics, so one could include it in the mix.

This analysis, which precedes synthesis is done we all know, but how?

FLS is more of a synthesis environment, but can it be used as an analytic tool to identify a sound "fingerprint", too?
