one midi controller - multiple plugins

Hi, so I've got the link to controller game down. If I link an eq to my midi controller, then that stays like that working only for that eq permanently. What I want to do is to map the same midi controller to multiple plugins, but only working on my selected plugin one at a time. Is this possible? I want it to control the eq when I have the eq selected, but I also want to use the same knobs for other plugins without having it go all over the place with the eq when I have selected a compressor I want to work on. Basically I'd like to control a compressor on one track using a set of knobs, but also the same knobs controlling the same parameters on the same plugin on a different track, not affecting the same plugin on the first track, hope I make myself clear. Halp?
