what kind of data exists inside of an audio sample, in a 44.1 kHz PCM audio file?

are there certain parameters in a wave file that a sequencer, or even a program like windows media player, vlc player what-have-you, use in order to play back the sequence of samples in a wave file?

curious to learn more about this process and how it relates to a WDM driver or an ASIO driver.
