Can someone help with this Issue?

I often use Arp & Chord type plugins, such as Scaler and some others..I set Scaler to a midi out port, and input midi in to various synth plugins on the same port number. The issue I have is that when I do that, all the channels I've set up with midi in, can't be muted from the channel rack..I have to go into the mixer to mute or solo the channels..Is that the normal behaviour, or is there another way..I find having to switch back and forth from the mixer window to try different arrangements a bit of a hastle..
