Straight to the rules:
1: Go to On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences
2: Find a sequence - maybe you have your favourites, like Pi, e or primes... whatever floats your boat. There's even some inspiration on the OEIS music page.
3: Click "listen"
4: You're now at the "turn that sequence to MIDI" page. There's a lot of settings you can tweak there. I suggest you just leave the most as is, except for "Pitch modulus", turn that down to something useful like 8 (so all the numbers get wrapped around 8 notes). Hard rule: You must use a Pitch modulus greater than 1.
5: Save that MIDI and drag it into FL Studio
6: Now it's time to adjust that "melody" to your liking. You are allowed to:
- Transpose the whole thing
- Make it fit a key
- Adjust velocities
- Insert pauses
- Adjust note lengths
- Stretch the whole thing or sections
- Cut off the ending (wherever you feel like)
6b: However, you are not allowed to place this pattern multiple times in your arrangement.
7: Write a song of any genre around this sequence.
Additionally:
- Use whatever instruments you like. Be warned that you'll be laughed at if you use a non-chromatic instrument for the sequence.
- Yes, you can mute parts of the sequence. I won't judge you if you do but hell yeah I'll tell the jury.
- Your song's duration must be at least 2:14 and no longer than 6:28
- Share the .flp (purely so we can check the MIDI you're using fits the rules - don't worry about VSTs we probably won't have)
- Upload your song to Soundcloud or as mp3 here
Good luck!
