Ersatz stereo

Hi.
In the 1980's I bought a Fostex multi-track tape recorder. Before I took it away the salesman showed me a little wrinkle that I could try. It consisted of recording a single line of music then turn the speed control a tiny way up or down and dub the same line on top of the original track. The result when played back was a lovely enhanced reverb and stereo effect. I did do it once and going through old tapes I came across it again and wondered why I hadn't used the method more. I no longer know where the Fostex is so I tried it on my keyboard. I couldn't record two tracks at different speeds so I altered the pitch a little on the second track. Unfortunately it didn't work, I just got an out of tune duet. Has anyone heard of this method?
