256 or 3 MIDI ports?

I think I have gotten the ports in this video confused with the ports that are part of a MIDI keyboard:



Are the 256 ports selectable from Settings - MIDI input / output devices an FL Studio limitation, a limitation of the specific output device selected, a limitation of the MIDI standard, or an operating system limitation? The 256 ports selectable from that red pentagon seen in the video above are way more than the 3 ports mentioned here http://www.tonalsoft.com/pub/pitch-bend/pitch.2005-07-21.17-00.aspx, so I wonder if this is just a very overloaded term. Is there a more precise term I can use when I am not talking about MIDI-In, MIDI-Out, or MIDI-Thru?
