The sony stereo I have has a lot of headphone power even enough to blow the headphones if one of my kids accidently turns the volume up and I don't realize it. I use it to power my speakers. The HD600s appear to need more power. The only issue with my stereo I get a little his noise. Not much but its not as clean as the audio interface. I found that the audio interface can't drive the hd600s very well. I'll try to explain what I mean with the stereo and the audio interface. Imagine car subs being at 2000 watts and trying to run them on a 300 watt car amp. After the volume gets turned up more and more the subs end up sounding bad and can not vibrate as hard as the correct amp if one were to be used. I happened to notice that the stereo I have seems to give the headphones more bass like its actually pushing the headphones. Even the AT headphones I have had more bass. No extra bass boost or anything either. The audio interface seems to power them at lower levels but once I crank it up more it does not sound as full or as much detail. I have an behringer. Some audio interfaces may have stronger headphone outs and some stereos may have weak headphone outs. That is my only guess. From what I read about the hd600s is that they need a fair about of juice to power the headphones but you may find that they work great on your audio interface. BTW I may use the audio technica headphones but I will be honest I wont ever be looking back. The HD600s are not flattery headphones by any means. IMO they sounded bass lacking more midrange present and dull on the top end. But why? Because the AT headphones were giving me a false mix sound with its extra boost in lows, a little dip in the midrange and the extra peak at the 10k freq. I can finally hear what sound is supposed to sound like with the HD600s and then mix music trusting it. Now as we all know no headphones are neutral and there are correction plugins out there, however I find these sounding way more flat than cheap headphones.jbarkerhill92 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 2:46 amSeems like an audio interface should be able to power most headphones. Do people use both an amp and an interface? Also an audio interface seems like a necessity for anyone making electronic music, to record from a midi piano / controller with low latency, and also need one for mic recording
Seems odd to plug headphones into a stereo. I tried that once and sound quality wasn't as good as through interface. I'm using an ancient M-Audio fast track, plugged USB into my laptop, and even through the old interface my headphones sound a lot better. Almost makes it feel like listening to a concert
Seems like the HD600s are the way to go. Prob will be my next headphones when I upgrade my entire setup
