Recognising sound

About 25 years ago I came this chap who could play on his keyboard, attached to his PC the exact sound of something that was on a CD after installing it. What the software he had I've no idea, hence asking here what that might be?

Further to that, is it possible a plugin could detect, instantly, the same thing?
