Re: late 80s/early 90s

Sounds about right except I guess you dont really mean 'mic up' the synths. You could use their audio output directly, you would not need to mic up a speaker for example.

The synths would not necesserily need to be recorded one at a time. Depending on how many tracks you had available on the tape.

In an ideal setup you could connect all your sound sources to your mixer. You could hear most of the elements you are working on at the same time. The main output connected to your monitor speakers.

Then on the mixer you can pick what tracks are sent to the tape for recording. Then what tracks are sent back from the tape during playback. Or what existing tracks to bounce down to fewer tracks to free up more new tracks.

You could sequence each piece either synced together using their own built in sequencers or a MIDI hardware or early MIDI software sequencer as a central hub or a combination of both. MIDI sequence melodic elements to a synth while programing the drums on a drum machine directly only synced to MIDI clock for example.

Once all your elements are recorded you could play it back and mix it down to a stereo track on another tape machine. Usually something in a more portable format.
