I am very pleased with FL Studio's immense music creation capabilities as well as the sound synthesis advantages offered by the many tools available.
However I have been pretty troubled by the file management and session management attributes of FL.
For example let us consider a simple case of using a sample from a local directory which may reside on a physical hard drive.
Therefore a sample exists on a channel within a pattern layer, for example pattern layer 1 has a singe sample, which could easily be 4 bar REX file consisting of freely defined arrangement.
Now we shall arrive at the issues with FL management and session management.
In my opinion as soon as Fl Studio obtains a file, the file should be moved to specific local project file, and secret session file should act as table of contents for the file and mark it's inclusion as well as the current file name.
In addition to this feature if the channel name were to be renamed an option which could be available and easily bypassed using a bypass keyboard shortcut to allow you change the name of the physical file. It would be immensely powerful if the project name could be automatically appended by either preceding the name of the file or following.
The following elaboration should clarify my intent...
Project name: hardcore
Original file name: kick01.wav
Loaded into channel 1
The channel name has been changed toÂ…
Kick1
Optional rename dialogÂ…
hardcore_kick1.wav
This file is now located in the local project folder with a new file name which is reflected at the most basic level on a channel.
What is the advantage of this? Primarily the burden of missing files, and improperly linking files during the search and reallocation process could be greatly mitigated.
For example this week I opened a project that I started and failed to continue through to completion. The session searched for the files and found most of the files. However as soon as the physical file name 01.wav was found it was loaded into a channel. Now of course this 01.wav audio file was not the right file, because it was from a different folder.
Hence I had folder with 01.wav as a harmonica and another 01.wav is a very peculiar sound effect.
How could this be avoided?
Well I suppose I could have used the export to zip file? Which could then require me to work from a local folder, but the file name issue could return if two files are pulled from separate folders and just happen to have the same file name. However the file naming and project naming feature could increase the management of sessions as well as provide visibility and importance to file naming.
Is there anyone who has experienced this burden, even worse been at the disadvantage of adversely altering a project?
Please comment, perhaps there is work flow modification which could help me to avoid this issue in the future?
Thank you,
Kevin
