Can someone please explain "initialized controls?"

This has been puzzling me. Sometimes it seems that an "initialized control" spontaneously creates itself, and I don't know why, or if it is OK to delete them. Eventually I end up having to use "init song in this position" but that seems like using an unnecessary band-aid. I'm looking at my file now, and I've been careful not to use the "init" function, but there are at least 20 initialized controls there, most for "volume" which is the mixer faders, and one for each type of automation I have done. What gives here? What is their function, and can I delete them without hosing up my song? Thanks!

edit: btw I do NOT automate my mixer faders!!!
