2.4ghz Quad vs. 3ghz Dual proc - which is preferable?

As the topic says. Currently I use an e6600 processor (2.4ghz), non-overclocked. It works very well but of course, the more CPU power I have access to, the more I use.. so I'm thinking of getting a new processor. I tend to use a lot of VST effects (100-150, including FL plugs) and maybe 10-25 VST instruments, primarily synths, but also some samplers like Kontakt 2. The instruments are the heavy hitters in terms of CPU.

Which would give me the most benefit - the q6600 processor, with 4 2.4ghz cores, or the e6850, with 2 3ghz cores? I know FL does not multithread effects, but maybe the 4 cores would still make a difference for VST instruments.

I think E6850 would be faster for most things. ...
