Sidechain automation problem

Í´m having a bit of a problem with sidechaining and automation and I wonder if anyone can help me out...I want my bass sidechained to the kick but when I do this the bass leaves a loud sound on during other parts of the song when the bass should not be playing at all as it is triggered by the kick. I have made a separate automation clip for the bass and turned down the volume to when I wan´t it to be quiet and I linked it to link 2 in "link to controlller" in the mixer but it still keeps being triggered by the kick as it wouldn´t register the separate second volume automation at all. In this case I bypassed the problem by creating a ghost kick to where I linked the sidechaining/peak controller but I wonder if there is a better/ correct way to do this kind of multiple link to controller automation or tutorials to be found on this topic.
