Help with timing audio clip to hit correct tempo

Hi
Ive searched youtube but i cant find what i need to know, its very frustrating. I make an audio clip, save it and paste it into a new project but after that im lost with getting it to fit the correct tempo. I know theres the SYNC button which does time it in but i dont know how to make each vocal note pop off each beat so my vocal doesnt hit each note and still sounds out of time. Im also not 100% at the trimming process. I tend to mess around and find out how to trim by accident. Is there a tutorial? All the ones ive seen on youtube already have done this process then tend to show how to play it on the piano roll or whatever. Ive sent a post like this before but i dont think i got an answer
Thanks a lot
