Akai fire - performance mode settings

I'm completely stumped. No matter what I tryi can't seem to figure out how to force clips to play the moment I activate a pad. It always does so snapped to a beat, rendering my careful production and timing completely useless. If I have a clip that starts just before the next measure, there's a delay and it throws everything off. I have figured out a work around that keeps the clips lined up so when it does kick in, it's at least in time with the track. It just kills the energy in my drops and break downs. I tried trigger sync>auto. I tried trigger sync>off. All the others are specifically snapped to a particular beat which is exactly what I don't want. Please help!
