Recording a clip in performance mode

I'm running FL11.1
I would like to record a clip (eg bass line) whilst in performance mode. I have some basic chords and drum pattern set up on launchpad which is looping and I want to "jam" some lead/bass lines and riffs into a pattern to add onto the pads later. I don't seem to be able to record a clip in performance mode whilst in song mode. If I go to clip mode I can record but of course no other clips play back. what am I missing? The only work flow I have is to record a session and then come out of performance mode and record my riffs etc as in a normal session...
