Peak Meter maxes out and the sound stops with a click noise

Audio Interface: Avid/M-Audio Fast Track C400

Peak Meter maxes out and the sound stops with a horrid click noise; I suspect because its peaked, even though the song is set to -10db. Part of me is hoping you'll tell me that it is my Fast Track C400, as I would like a reason to replace it (but not the expense)! This has occasionally occurred before FL20, but now it keeps happening with regularity. It isn't location specific in the song.
