Quick auditioning method for samples?

Hey guys - here's a question I will spend the next several hours trying to answer myself...but just in case someone else has a solution, here's my quandary: I'm hoping to replicate a cool technique I saw for Ableton Live where I saw a template setup that allowed banks of samples to be scrolled through simply by turning a midi controller knob. A simple template with kick, hat, snare... turn a controller, and scroll through 128/256 kick samples, all while the track/pattern is playing. Way quicker than digging through folders and replacing samples one at a time to have a listen... Such a fantastic way to speed up workflow!! I can't think how to do anything as efficient in FL... ? FPC pad controller? holds 32 pads with layers etc, but changing note allocations/velocities is not as simple as turning a knob or moving a fader....
Directwave? I have never really explored this much; maybe there's a way?

I don't know how to do it.... but any templates/workflow improvement suggestions are welcome... feeling overwhelmed by too many shiny new plugins & options that I'm too paralysed to begin a track lately! Please, thanks, and apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.
