I'm having a very frustrating time dealing with tempo changes in my projects that have recorded audio. Anyone whose tried this probably knows exactly the issue I'm experiencing:
When the tempo changes, the playlist display of the digial audio stretches out in real-time, even digital audio that comes before the time change. If the tempo increases, audio clips which have already played will now extend past the current play point, and if I pause the audio they will start playing out of time when playback resumes. Sometimes even if I don't pause playback I will hear audible glitches. If I have a long audio track that spans the time change, beats will appear completely skewed on one side of the tempo change - and the side that is incorrect will change depending on which tempo the song was in when I last played it. The display is entirely unpredictable and is 100% guaranteed to be wrong on one side of the time change or the other. I have all the audio clips configured to not allow time-stretching, that is not causing the issue.
This feature is handled very well in other DAWs. In Ableton, when you automate the master tempo, the display of digital audio (which is set up not to allow warping) stretches/compresses in real-time, as you add automation events. This guarantees that beats "look" correct on the digital audio compared to the MIDI events.
In Reaper, when you automate a time change the measure markers change their width accordingly. This way the display of digital audio is never distorted based on meter changes - shorter (i.e. faster) measures appear shorter on the timeline, but audio always looks exactly as it sounds. This is arguably a better solution.
My "perfect" DAW would have a checkbox where I could toggle between these two modes, but having neither makes tempo automation in FL Studio more trouble than its worth and I just use a different DAW for those tracks.
Are there any plans to get this into FL Studio 11? I noticed someone had requested this feature in a version 11 thread, and I intended to upvote it but apparently clicked downvote and now I can't take my vote back. I think it's an essential feature. What you see on the screen should accurately reflect what you hear, despite any time change automation.
