The default location is just a default, you can put your files wherever you want. You can also tell FL to use a different default location by changing the "User data" folder in the File settings window.
As for backups, those are always a good idea.

Just setting up my back up locations,set my data to my external drive and my projects to my flash drive, and set Norton to back up to the cloud,lol
some of my friends (same age) has never hear of cloud storage!
