Adding a new pattern to Play list

I have already arranged my track and selected split by channels and added those patterns to the playlist. How can I play my arranged song and still create new patterns in real time? Say I have a fully composed song in the play list and I want to add a simple shaker or another percussion sound. How do i create a new pattern and add it to the playlist? Would I split by channel again?
