Mixer "Current" channel

I've been using FL for a very long time, but today I noticed for the first time that not only is the "current" channel in the mixer able to be selected, but you can also add effects to it. At first I thought it was intended just for monitoring (after all, there is already another one called Master), but I noticed if I added other non-visual effects on it the audio is actually processing (like if you added a delay effect on it, etc...).

Is this actually just for monitoring or does that get processed on render? I guess I was confused as to why the audio seems to be actually processing the effects, though I get why you might want to attach effects to it (like having mvmeters or other things like that attached).
