old projects loading with incorrect audio clips

i keep having instances where i'll load an older project and it will have the incorrect audio file loaded.
a vocal riff that i'd chopped no has 8 bars of silence instead of starting with the vocals I had arranged before.
my search paths are set correctly. what's going on?
