Audio interface questions

Hello to all,

Sorry if this is the wrong section for questions about audio, I couldn't find the audio/studio section. My question is, does a midi controller go through the preamps of an audio interface? I'd like to upgrade my interface and I'm wondering what exactly I need from one. It seems like most specs on audio interfaces don't boast about "clocking." I've only seen RME list clocking specs in interfaces under $1000. Does the clocking count as a "word clock?" Thanks.
