I'd love to see a redesigned mixer, with dynamic channels. I thought I'd mock up an idea in Figma:
(I'm not associated with IL, I just had a free afternoon to do this!)
Design cues were taken from FLSM and other DAWs
From Left to right:
The Current channel is replaced by a custom visualisation plugin of the user's choice. In this case, Peak shows the peaks of a track. However, you could also choose wave candy etc. from the dropdown. Whatever you choose will replace the peak meters in this image.
The Master channel has had a redesign as well.
Channels are created when new instruments are added in the channel rack, automatically. (No more 'What is that thing assigned to the master?!!!'), the same with samples. They also automatically delete themselves. The channel rack icon in the mixer will open the channel rack at the instrument assigned to the mixer track.
Audio buses can be added from the + button on the side. They have an input and an output, both of which have a dropdown menu with checkboxes. Users can open the dropdown to access checkboxes revealing which channels to input or output to. The dropdown needs to stay open after each click so you don't have to constantly re-open it.
The FX section is entierly overhauled. There is now a mini-patcher view where the FX section was. I removed the EQ because I've never seen anyone use it, and there should be a legacy mode hidden away at the top menu for any projects which still do. The bypass button is now where I think it should have been in the first place, at the top of the channel strip, along with a handy button that lets you pop the FX section off into it's own seperate window as shown here:
Also, to access the FX controls (On/off, Wet/Dry, Open FX plugin window), you hover your mouse over the patcher icon, and 3 options pop up:
I know that the mixer is hardcoded, and that it's going to require a complete rewrite to get to something like this, but I think the future looks bright. Maybe this might even make it into FL 21, but I doubt it .
