Sidechaining with 3rd party Plugins

Does anyone know a way to sidechain using 3rd party plugins?

What I've been doing: (Kik n Bass example) Highlight Kik, right click Bass and sidechain. On Bass insert a VST3 plugin, go to (cogwheel) Settings, then wrapper settings (plug + cogwheel), and select the SC input as the Kik channel. This method does not sidechain.
