Regarding the pitfalls of mixing for one's own environment: in my experience, understanding sound as partial frequencies can help to compensate for it.
Running detailed-enough spectrum analysis (16384 FFT bins, fast response) on one's monitoring output at all times is a good way to [learn to] understand mixing in terms of what is actually there, regardless of monitoring environment.
In other words, instead of mixing in a particular environment, one would aim for the mix to have particular content. Then, translation to other environments can be thought of with more certainty, at least if sound reproduction characteristics of those environments are known.
