What is the fastest way to copy pattern to another instrument?

Sorry for a newby question, but what would be the fastest way to copy a pattern from one instrument to another instrument with its midi information? I mean, sometimes there is need to insert another track instrument and to use midi data from another instrument. Preferably the action won't involve the channel rack... and if it does, what is fastest action.
